Geographic position

The municipality of Vlasenica is located in the eastern part of the Republic of Srpska, belongs to the Sarajevo-Zvornik region, in the part of the middle Podrinje, on the northern slopes of the mountain Javor, in the area of ​​slightly stratified plateaus, river flows and forest areas. It is embroidered in a part of the region called Birač. Vlasenica as a city settlement is located on the northern slopes of the Javor Mountain at 680 m, west of the 1314 m Sokolina Mountain and in the north and east are mildly stratified plateaus, interspersed with deciduous and coniferous trees, pastures, arable land, rivers and streams. The height intervals are from 200 to 1400 m. This geo-space belongs to the confluence of ​​the Drina River, and it is located at the climatic turning point of cold air masses from Javor Mountain and somewhat warmer air masses that come along the valleys of Drinjača, Tišča and Jadra rivers, making this area very windy, especially in the spring and autumn when the air currents are most expressive. The mathematical-geographical position is expressed by the coordinates: 44°11 ‘north latitude and 18°57’ east longitude. The size of the Municipality of Vlasenica was 532 km², but when the new Municipality of Milići was established, the area of ​​the Municipality of Vlasenica was reduced to 234 km², which makes it 0,93% of the Republic of Srpska and 0,46% of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Vlasenica municipality is a geospatial complex of a natural system with diverse natural-geographic and socio-economic features. It spatially belongs to the Dinaric Relief macro unit with the largest peak of VelikaIgrišta at 1405 m above the Javor Mountain, which is more than 60 km from the middle course of the Drina River to the initial course of the Drinjača River, and as such belongs to the longest subsystems in the eastern part of the Republic of Srpska.

Vlasenica is located on the highway Belgrade – Sarajevo, Novi Sad – Sarajevo and intersection of roads between: Han Pijesak, Šekovici, Tuzla and Zvornik.

Historically, this area had important roads passing though it from the time of the Romans who traveled from Dubrovnik to Srebrenica, Zvornik and Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica). More broadly looking at the natural and economic macro regions, the position of Vlasenica is characterized by the convenience of connecting these regions and the transit tourism where the tourist flowsare directed through Vlasenicato the Montenegrin coast from direction of Belgrade, Novi Sad and other towns of that part of Serbia, as well as in the winter period towards the Olympic mountains Jahorina and Bjelašnica.
